From its roots as a private code among a handful of California teenagers to a nationally recognized celebration, 4/20 carries decades of culture, advocacy, and community behind it. Here in Buffalo, that legacy shows up in a way that’s entirely our own.
What Is 4/20? The Origin of 4/20
If you’ve ever wondered what is 4/20 or where the term actually comes from, the answer starts in 1971 with five high school students in San Rafael, California. They called themselves the Waldos and used “420” as a code for their after-school cannabis treasure hunts near Point Reyes. The treasure was never found, but the term stuck and spread.
From there, the Waldos’ connection to the Grateful Dead and the broader counterculture helped carry the term into music communities and concert circuits throughout the 1970s and 1980s. High Times magazine amplified it nationally in 1990, and by the 2000s, cannabis advocacy organizations had turned April 20 into a platform for legalization rallies and reform efforts across the U.S.
Today it functions as something close to a cultural holiday. Part celebration, part call to action, and increasingly, a day when licensed dispensaries across the country offer their most anticipated 420 cannabis deals of the year.
